Vegan in Iceland

ICE, ICE BABY (dun-dun-dun-dun-nuh-nuh-nuh)

Yes, I, Olivia, did venture out to the land of the ice and have returned to tell the tale. Please call me Elsa from now on as I have returned as a frigid bitch-ice queen and will steal your lunch money if prompted.

Nah, I’m kidding, but before I start this blog post, lemme just say: Iceland is the SHIT. What a cool place man!!! It’s like another planet over there!!

So my friend Ali and I went up for the weekend (casually) and stayed in an air bnb in Reykjavik, which is where we spent most of our time. Anyway, Reykjavik is a pretty small city (like incredibly small) so there weren’t that many vegan places, but the places we went to were pretty darn incredible (so much so, that we went to everyplace at least twice on our visit lol).

We also did a day tour with Reykjavik Excursions to go snowmobiling on a glacier (call me Laura Croft from now on) so I’ll give you all some vegan tips if any of you do on an all-day tour through the same company (chances are you will since it’s like the most popular tour company there).

One: Kaffi Vinyl

THIS PLACE IS SO GOOD!!!! It’s this little trendy cafe in Reykjavik that is super popular but also popping! Disco lights, cool music, trendy people with nose piercings and pink hair… def a hot spot for the Icelandic hipsters and alternatives.

Not to mention, the food is incredible. 100/10 recommend the “Kawaii” sandwhich. I can’t describe the magic that is in that sandwich, so you’ll just have to try it for yourself

Two: Glo

Glo is a healthy food eatery with hot dishes, salad bar pre-prepared salads, and BOMB ASS RAW DESERTS. Fuck me up fam. We went back twice and the waiter legit knew exactly what to give us because that’s how obvious it was that we loved the dessert the first time.

For lunch we got the vegan wrap with a few side salads which was hearty, filling, tasting, and healthy. But the main star of the restaurant was the dessert!!!

We got a moist chocolate cake (ugh want it rn), a raw raspberry brownie, a SNICKERS slice, and a raw tirimisu!! And to wash it all down: A salted caramel latte #DED

Go here for dessert. I promise you will not regret it.

Three: Eldur and Is Crepes

Speaking of desserts, do you love crepes as much as I do? Good, cuz you’re in luck. Reykjavik has a crepe place that serves VEGAN CREPES!!!!!! I know, I died too.

Ali and I split a vegan crepe with chocolate sauce, vegan marshmallows (!!), bananas, and maple syrup. Heaven. Heaven. Heaven. Heaven. Sad it wasn’t instagram worthy but it was def tummy worthy.

Four: Vegan on a day tour (Specifically Reykjavik Excursions)

So, for the road, Ali and I legit decided we were going to bulk up on calories before snowmobiling (don’t know where the logic was in that but #k) so we brought with us protein bars, a subway sandwich, and multitude of snacks. Like, a ridiculous amount of snacks.

Most of the tours you go on in Iceland will take a bus from the BSI bus terminal. Next to the BSI, there is a subway and gas station store where we bought our sandwiches and snacks. It’s open pretty early too.

Also, the BSI itself has a cafe with a vegan chickpea wrap which Ali and I ate and obsessed over. I took a pic, but can’t find it so I apologize, but take my word on it, k? Cool.

Then, on most tours, (especially the Golden Circle Tours) they stop at this one place for lunch (since it’s right next to a few geysers) which has a very highly reviewed soup kitchen that has VEGAN SOUP! YAS! I didn’t try it because I was deepthroating my subway sandwich (was that too graphic? Eh who cares), but the tour guide highly recommended it.

Five: Keflavik Airport

Ok guys, I do have to say I was incredibly impressed by the vegan options in this airport. It’s a small, not very crowded airport but they do have a shit ton of options.

. Joe & the Juice (Vegan sandwiches, muffins, acai bowls, coffee)

. Airport store which sold: vegan sushi, chia pudding, fresh fruit smoothies, vegan falafel salad, and a vegan focaccia sandwhich (which I got and YUM).

Anyway, 10/10 recommend the city. Amazing museums, frozen lakes, glaciers to snowmobile on, vegan places, the blue lagoon, and the friendliest people you will ever meet. Not to mention, it’s an incredibly feminist country so WAHOO
