Vegan in… Antarctica!? (Polar Latitudes Vegan Options)

Yes, people, my sister and I went to Antarctica – the South Pole!!!!! HOW FUCKING DOPE. Excuse my French, but also not really because I’m so excited and jazzed about it that IDC what you think!!!

To answer some preliminary questions off the bat:

  1. No, there are no hotels or restaurants on the entire continent. You have to take a boat there. It can be a cruise or an expedition boat – we did the latter so we could get off and explore 🙂
  2. We took the MS Seaventure ship with the company Polar Latitudes. They do accommodate vegans!
  3. We were there for ten days, so if it wasn’t on the boat, we weren’t eating it. Keep that in mind in terms of snacking!
  4. The trip is very expensive but also very worth it.

Ok, now back to the food. Included in the cost of the trip was a 24/7 open bar (yes, I was hungover for half of the trip lmao), coffee/tea available at any time with countless kinds of dairy free milks, and 3-4 meals a day cooked by professional onboard chefs, including additional desserts and free-flowing wine at dinner. I mean, c’mon. Unreal.

Although breakfast and lunch were buffet style, sometimes the vegans would get meals specifically prepared for them. However, the buffets also always had vegan options, even though there were slim. For breakfast, there was always toast with vegan cream cheese, fruits, hash browns, veggies, juices, coffees, etc. For lunch, there were always salads and other vegan options. Dinner was sit down and you had to order from a menu. There was only one vegan option on the menu in terms of entreee (occationally they had vegan appetizers/soups/and dessert but not always), but most of the time they were pretty good. Here are some pics of the meals below.

In case you couldn’t tell what some of some of those pics were, here are some of the vegan dishes we had on the boat: veggie lasagna, tofu glass noodle stir fry, mozzarella arancini, pasta with sauce and cheese, rice pudding, regular chocolate pudding, taco bowls, burritos, baked potato, avocado tartare, and many more options. Rest assured, you won’t go starving! But, warning, I did lose weight on the trip from not absolutely loving the food (but again, I was also hungover a lot). Some meals were hit or miss. But the chefs and staff (shout out to Geraldine for legit being assigned to making sure the vegans were content and well-fed) really made it all amazing! You could taste the love for sure!!

However, as a caveat, we did bring a bunch of vegan snacks on board (including protein bars), which helped supplement the meals when we were snacky.

Anyway, the trip was AMAZING! Honestly some of the best ten days of my life and if you can afford to do it, I 100% recommend it!! Pics below!
