Vegan at Sougo Japanese Shojin Restaurant Tokyo

I know I’m always holding you all accountable for reading our prior posts, butttttttt if you did read our prior posts, you would know that we took a Japanese cooking class in Tokyo. If you did read that post (aka if you are a true TVLD fan), then you saw the picture of the chef who taught us.

Well, he not only teaches cooking classes but is actually the main chef at a restaurant called Sougo Japanese Shojin Restaurant. What a mouth full! (*resisting the urge to make a that’s what she said joke*)

Anyway, not only was this chef incredibly kind and cared so much about the food he was making, but he was incredibly talented! The food he made us was incredibly delicious. I’m not exactly sure what this Japanese cuisine is called, but I think it is the traditional Japanese cuisine which comes with multiple little bite-size courses.

I’ll try my best to explain the following dishes:

This one was almost like a fried inari with thinly sliced, rolled up tofu inside. It came with a side of sweet/sour dipping sauce. It was like a tofu spring roll and it was delicious!

Next was a crispy tofu covered in this peanut sauce that was so freaking amazing. I still dream about this dish.

Jiro dreams of sushi and I dream of this dish.

This was a mushroom broth soup topped with these delicious and rare mushrooms.

This one was incredibly cute and called “the corn maze” as it is supposed to look like a corn maze. The base was a sort of corn-meal soup and it was topped with roasted veggies and potatoes.

The dessert was especially interesting and looked like a cracked egg. Don’t worry folk, no eggs were harmed in the making of this dessert. The “yolk” part was actually a jelly disk (sans gelatin of course) and the “egg white” part was a clear syrup. It was kinda odd, but delicious nonetheless.

And these were just A FEW of the courses! So if you’re in Tokyo and you want to experience a traditional multi-course Japanese meal (and fall into a massive food coma), this is your place! Thanks chef for the amazing meal!
