Vegan at Matsuhisa – Los Angeles, CA

I know I’m basic when I say this, BUT if a celebrity really likes a restaurant, it means it’s good. I’m sorry, I don’t make the rules. I heard Travis Barker (who is vegan… and also Kourtney Kardashian’s boo) really liked the vegan sushi at Matsuhisa in Beverly Hills, as well as their vegan shaved ice dessert. The SECOND I heard shaved ice dessert, I HAD TO GO. I found out Matsuhisa is a Nobu restaurant so I knew they would have baller vegan options.

To be honest, I don’t know how Matsuhisa is any different from Nobu? They had literally all the same options. Which isn’t a bad thing (AT ALL. I love Nobu), but I’m confused why it’s under a different name? This place is a little less showy than Nobu though, more casual, and had the vibes of a warm hibachi place.

We came with our friend Madara and decided to BALL OUT. The waiters (although curt/to the point) were very nice, including this little old man waiter who was the real MVP and double checked that some of the options were vegan. Ask your waiter what can be made vegan and they will give you the low down. If Travis Barker can do it, anyone can!

To start we got the vegan version of the hearts of palm salad which was BOMB AF. It tasted like truffles, but was light and refreshing. Then we got the crispy rice with avocado (instead of tuna) and it was soooooo warm and yummy!!! We also got avocado rolls (because DUH) and then finished the night with garlic sautéed vegetables and rice. TBH the vegetables were pretty random and I wouldn’t order them again, but the rice was SOO good. Deff get a side of that and top with some soy sauce.

The true star of the night, the moment we’ve all been waiting for, was….. DRUM ROLL PLEASE.

THE SHAVED ICE!!!!!!!!!! I am a straight up HOE for shaved ice. I can’t explain it. It’s just ice with syrup but it HITS DIFFERENT. Don’t fight me on that you bitches. So we got the shaved ice with strawberry syrup (we wanted the matcha but they informed us it wasn’t vegan #sad but also shout out to our amazing waiter who double checked for us). We also got coconut sorbet on the bottom, and a side of red beans beacuse RED BEANS ARE LIFE.

HEAVEN IN A DISH. 10/10. Would come back here daily for that dessert. It slapped so hard. Yall have no idea. The syrup was perfection. The ice was perfection. The red beans were perfection. And I don’t even LIKE sorbet that much but the coconut sorbet was 10/10, so creamy and fresh and was the perfect surprise at the bottom of the dish. If you go here, you HAVE to get the shaved ice for dessert. WOW. Gonna dream about that until I go back.
