VEGAN OF THE MONTH: JULY

Charlotte Roy

unnamed

What inspired you to go vegan?

C: Honestly, I first went vegan because I wanted to lose weight. I heard an interview of Rich Roll on a paleo podcast and immediately went online to check the vegan “diet”. I ended up binge-watching Freelee’s videos and went vegan the next day.

Although it took me almost 2 years to start losing the weight, I obviously realized really quickly how many health benefits it was involving. I am now growing more aware of the environmental issues and what an omnivorous diet inflicts to (on? Sorry, English…) animals.
What are some of your favorite vegan restaurants?

C: When I was living in NYC I used to love Peacefood Cafe (seriously, have you tried their chickpea fries?!) but I have yet to try the famous names as well.

In Paris, I have a few go-to restaurants such as Le Tricycle, and Las Vegans for their pumpkin latte. I am a cook at Sol Semilla, an all organic vegan and gluten-free restaurant and I must say I already loved it before getting a job there.
What are your favorite vegan dishes to make?
C:  Sweet potato fries, hands down. I’m a big curry fan as well (like any vegetables, loads of fresh spices, coconut milk, and a big pile of sticky rice). Oh and I am a hummus junkie too. I can make anything hummus.
What are common misconceptions about being vegan?
C: Around me, people tend to think vegans are usually deprived in something, may it be protein, vitamins, minerals… They also think it’s a nightmare to go out because there’s no option whatsoever. Ok, it’s not as easy as picking anything on any menu, but there’s always room for vegans. Even if it’s just a salad and a steamed potato.
What do you find is the worst part about being vegan?
C: Triple checking the milk and egg content in restaurant. But you just get used to it.
What is the best part about being vegan?
C: Knowing I might be doing something good for the planet? I don’t know. Feeling energized and happy mostly, even when I haven’t slept in 20 hours.
What advice to you have for people who want to become vegan?

C: If it takes 1 night, good for you. If it takes 3 years, good for you. There’s no one way to do it so follow your own rhythm, be mindful and don’t overthink it.

How has your life changed since you’ve become vegan?
C: I have started so many interesting discussions with people, I sleep better, I feel better in my body, I have touched people in my close family who change their diet radically and their health issues disappeared, and I am answering questions to be a “vegan of the month” on an awesome blog!
What are the top 3 reasons to go vegan?

C:

1. Whatever makes you go vegan.
2. Whatever makes you go vegan.
3. Whatever makes you go vegan.
What are your favorite vegan blogs/instagram/youtube channels?
C: It really depends on my mood actually. I follow Freelee for sure, on and off. At the moment I also watch Plantriotic’s videos a lot, as well as Supreme Banana’s. My favorite lately is Lauren Toyota and her channel Hot for Food.
Do you have a blog, instagram, or youtube channel?

C: My Instagram is @charlotteplants. I have a YouTube channel but there’s close to nothing on it and I’m realizing I might not be that much of a youtuber. Same for the blog.

I’m on snapchat too! (@charlotteplants as well)
